In brief

In the picturesque Gacko village of Ruda Glavica, where life still follows the rhythms of nature and tradition, lies the farm of Milovan and Milanka Marković—a family that has relied on livestock farming for generations and proudly preserves the customs and values of traditional rural life. Today, the family cares for around ten cows, twenty sheep, as well as chickens raised for meat. Through their hard work, they continue to produce what was once an essential part of every rural household: high-quality homemade food, made with dedication, knowledge and love. At the Marković family farm, visitors can buy a variety of traditional local products directly from the producers, including fresh milk and dairy products, young cheese and traditional cheese aged in a sheepskin sack (sir iz mješine), rich homemade kajmak, and fresh farm eggs. For those who appreciate traditional locally raised meat, the family also raises lambs and calves on the farm. Their range of products extends beyond livestock farming. The family also makes homemade juices and jams from carefully selected fruit, following recipes and methods that have been passed down through generations in Herzegovinian households. One of the special qualities of this farm is that most of its products are sold directly at the farm gate. There are no intermediaries or large supermarkets—just a direct connection between the producer and those who appreciate homemade food and recognize its authentic taste. A visit to the Marković family farm is more than an opportunity to buy high-quality local products. It offers a glimpse into a way of life that is still very much alive in the villages around Gacko—a life shaped by people who understand the value of their work, respect the land and the animals that sustain them, and proudly carry on the traditions of their ancestors.
