Kalinovik is a mountain municipality in south-eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It borders the municipalities of Trnovo, Foča, Gacko, Nevesinje and Konjic. The area has mountains and lakes and good conditions for livestock, and the municipality adopts a rulebook on farm incentives. The latest published one is for 2025.

In short

  • The municipality covers 681.11 km2 and is the twelfth largest in Republika Srpska. The 2013 census counted 2,029 residents, half of them living in villages.
  • Mountain terrain makes up 83.5% of the area and flat land only 1.7%. The municipality itself says conditions are good for livestock, forestry and tourism, but poor for crop farming.
  • Highest peaks: Treskavica 2,088 m, Lelija 2,032 m, Zelengora 2,014 m, Visočica 1,974 m and Crvanj 1,920 m.
  • The municipality supports milk, cattle, sheep, goat and bee production, and the sale of local products in the "Kalinovačka kuća" shop under a contract with the public institution JU Turistička organizacija Kalinovik (Tourist Organisation of Kalinovik).
  • Municipal Administration: tel. 057/623-118.

What the area offers

Mountains and lakes. The municipality lists the mountain lakes Kotlaničko, Štirinsko, Borilovačko, Orlovačko, Crvanjsko and Kladopoljsko, and the rivers Neretva and Bistrica. Park rules, trails and guest services on the Sutjeska side are described in the article on Zelengora and the Sutjeska National Park lakes. Bosnia and Herzegovina still has suspected minefields from the war. Before hiking on Treskavica, ask the Municipal Administration about trail conditions, and stay on marked paths.

Ulog. According to the municipality, the climate around Ulog is milder, moderate continental, because the Neretva basin is sheltered from strong cold winds. The rest of the municipality has a mountain climate with cold winters.

Katuns and cheese. Summer grazing and the rules for sir iz mijeha (cheese matured in a skin) are described in the article "Katuns and sir iz mijeha". We found no municipal list of katuns in Kalinovik, so arrange exact locations with the hosts.

Events. The municipality organises the Petrovdan celebrations. The 2025 programme included sports tournaments, a literary evening, a Petrovdan market in the town park on 12 July and a folklore festival. The programme is published on the municipal website before the holiday. In 2025 it appeared on 30 June.

Municipal agricultural incentives (2025 rulebook)

The latest published rulebook is for 2025 (no. 02-330-11/25 of 16 October 2025, amended 20 November 2025). Legal entities and farms based in Kalinovik municipality are eligible. Under the Decision on the municipal budget for 2026 (Official Gazette of the Municipality of Kalinovik 9/25), 170,000 KM is planned for agricultural incentives. The whole agricultural subsidies item is 381,000 KM, but it also includes 36,000 KM for the veterinary clinic, 5,000 KM for producers selling through "Kalinovačka kuća", 120,000 KM for the public utility JKP Rad (water supply and sewerage) and 50,000 KM of business incentives. No 2026 rulebook has been published on the municipal website so far. The amounts and deadlines below applied in 2025. Use them as a guide and check them with the agriculture officer, Mladen Sladoje (057/623-582).

  • Milk premium: 0.15 KM per litre, paid directly to the producer. The milk collection organiser submits the claim each month, by the 10th of the following month at the latest.
  • Cows in a cow-calf system: up to 50 KM per head, for three or more cows of beef or dual-purpose breeds, with copies of cow and calf passports. Claims by 30 November.
  • Sheep and goats: up to 10 KM per head, for a core flock of at least 10 breeding sheep or goats. The original rulebook covered only sheep, with a deadline of 10 November. The amendment of 20 November 2025 added goats and moved the deadline to 20 November, the same day the amendment was adopted.
  • Bees: up to 13 KM per colony, depending on available funds. The beekeepers' association submits the claim for its members by 30 November.
  • Greenhouses, laying hens and seed packages are distributed through the Association of Agricultural Producers.
  • "Kalinovačka kuća": anyone who has a contract with the Tourist Organisation of Kalinovik to sell farm products, processed foods or crafts in the shop receives 20% of the value of goods sold, after the margin is deducted. The money is paid monthly, based on a list sent by the Tourist Organisation.

A claim for cows, sheep or goats must include a certified veterinary confirmation that the animals are on the holding, with the ID number of each animal, and a certified statement that the animals will not be sold or transferred for at least three years. The claim and statement forms are in the rulebook PDF.

The municipal website's public calls page also carries the Republika Srpska public call for capital investments in agriculture for 2026. Those subsidies are covered in a separate article on Republika Srpska capital investment subsidies for 2026.
