Tourism in Trebinje and East Herzegovina: visitor numbers and what they mean for agro-tourism

Published: 6 October 2026Updated: 8 October 2026Author: AgroTour Connect team
In brief

Trebinje had 105,591 tourist arrivals and 194,036 overnight stays in 2025 (RZS), about 77% of arrivals foreign. After growth up to 2024 the numbers fell slightly. Neighbouring municipalities record only a few hundred guests a year, and guests stay about 1.8 nights on average.

This overview is for households, winemakers, restaurants and rural accommodation owners in East Herzegovina who want to know how many tourists come, what draws them and where agro-tourism fits.

In short

  • Trebinje in 2025: 105,591 tourist arrivals and 194,036 overnight stays (Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics, RZS). Foreigners made up 80,904 arrivals (about 77%) and 132,725 nights (about 68%).
  • Growth up to 2024 was fast: 33,371 arrivals in 2021, 95,631 in 2023, 107,567 in 2024 (207,837 nights). In 2025 arrivals fell about 2% and nights about 7%.
  • In 2025 Trebinje had about 21% of all tourist arrivals and about 16% of all nights in Republika Srpska (514,740 arrivals and 1,207,068 nights in total), with an average stay of about 1.8 nights.
  • The Trebinje Tourist Organisation, using its own records, reported 230,710 nights in 2024 (14.74% above 2023). This differs from the RZS figure because the sources differ, so do not mix them in one comparison.

Where guests come from and what they visit

  • According to the Tourist Organisation's report for 2024, of foreign nights about 51% were guests from Serbia, 17% Turkey, 7% Montenegro, about 3% each Croatia and China, and about 2% Greece.
  • For 2024 the same organisation lists as most visited the monasteries, churches, monuments, the Old Town (Kastel) with its mosques, the Museum of Herzegovina and the Perović (Arslanagić) bridge. Wine cellars and restaurants and taverns serving national cuisine also had heavy visitor numbers.
  • The organisation separately reports a record number of visits to the sports and tourism complex "Grad sunca".

Neighbouring municipalities

RZS records far lower figures for 2025: Bileća 672 arrivals (416 domestic and 256 foreign) and 1,912 nights, Gacko 649 arrivals (370 domestic and 279 foreign) and 1,276 nights, Nevesinje 378 arrivals, all domestic, and 530 nights. There is no recorded data for Ljubinje and Berkovići. Guests mostly stay in Trebinje, and the surrounding area barely shows in the statistics so far.

What this means for agro-tourism

  • Guests already come for wine and home cooking, so tastings, a lunch on the farm and buying at the farm gate fit naturally into a Trebinje visit.
  • A short stay (under two nights on average) means the easiest thing to sell is a half-day or day activity for guests already sleeping in town.
  • The guest mix (Serbia, Turkey, Montenegro) shows which languages and channels are worth using.
  • The figures do not say how many guests visit rural farms. That data is not published, so do not assume it: ask guests how they found you and keep your own records.

What to do

This is advice, not a legal duty.

  1. Register your guests as the law requires, and check with the municipal department responsible for tourism or with the Tourist Organisation which registration duties apply to you. Statistics show only recorded guests.
  2. Contact the Trebinje Tourist Organisation to be included in its offer and materials.
  3. Link up with accommodation in town so your offer is an excursion for guests already staying in Trebinje.
  4. Follow new RZS and Tourist Organisation data before planning investments.
